Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception is a one-time pill that prevents pregnancy, typically after the failure of another method (like a broken condom or missed withdrawal). Emergency contraception is often confused with abortion pills, but they are not the same. Emergency contraception works for up to five days, or 120 hours, after unprotected sex, but the sooner it is taken after unprotected intercourse, the more likely it is to prevent pregnancy.

Where can I get emergency contraceptives?

  • Bridgercare carries Plan B, Ella (which can be used for folks above a certain BMI and is a more effective EC pill option compared to Plan B), and Paragard and Mirena IUDs, which can be inserted as a form of emergency contraception.

  • Both Ella and an IUD require prescriptions, so if you are interested in one of those options, Bridgercare is happy to schedule an appointment!
