All About Menopause
By: Mary Allen
What is menopause?
Menopause is defined as the permanent cessation of menstrual periods for at least a full year and is a natural life transition for women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB). The average age for menopause in the U.S. is 51, but the age menopause starts can vary greatly between individuals.
The experience of menopause differs A LOT between individuals. Some people experience no symptoms (aside from no more pesky periods!) but others may experience:
Hot flashes
Night sweats
Sleep disturbances
Decreased libido
Pain during sex
Vaginal dryness and/or irritation
Urinary incontinence
Changes in mood
Difficulty concentrating
The average length of the menopausal transition is 9.4 years, which can feel like a long time! Studies show that after going through menopause, most people report life satisfaction equal to or even greater than prior to menopause. While symptoms can be uncomfortable and bothersome, by getting help with moving through them, you CAN get to a good point!
What is the menopause transition?
The menopause transition, also commonly called perimenopause, is a natural life stage characterized by fluctuating, declining levels estrogen production by the ovaries. One consequence of less estrogen is a change in the balance of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, which leads to a lot of the symptoms of the menopause transition.
These subtle hormonal changes often begin in the early to mid 40s, but in some people, they start even earlier. The average length of the menopause transition is 4-8 years, although this can vary widely from person to person. The transition to menopause is complete when a person has gone more than one year without a period. Symptoms of perimenopause are similar to menopause, with the addition of menstrual cycle changes.
