Movember = Men's Health Awareness Month

Did you know that the average man in the US dies 5 years earlier than the average woman?! Men's average life expectancy is only 76 years, whereas the average woman in the US lives to be over 81 years old.

We want to help men live longer, happier, healthier lives and that is why we are celebrating Movember here at Bridgercare! The month-long event is bringing attention to men’s health and raising awareness about prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention, which are common threats to men’s health. In honor of Movember, we asked male patient and donor Tim* about his experiences and why he chooses to donate.

This is what he told us:

“My personal experience with Bridgercare is what initially compelled me to donate. I grew up in a very religious family that did not believe in sex education, and by the time I became sexually active, I still had no idea what I was doing. I made a few stupid mistakes during high school and college that could have had far worse consequences if Bridgercare had not been there.

Secondly, I didn’t have health insurance or any way to access medical treatment at the time, so the sliding scale fee structure was incredibly helpful. Basically for free, I received such great treatment when I needed it most. Donating is the least I can do now that I can afford to.

Lastly, it seems our political situation is jeopardizing how much funding family planning clinics will receive. I feel that it’s important for people to donate when they are able, so we can make sure the clinic is able to operate for the community without financial limitations.”

Thank you Tim* for taking care of your health and sharing your story with us! We encourage everyone to schedule annual wellness visits here at Bridgercare (and not only make an appointment if something is wrong!). You can receive a physical and testicular exam, wellness labs, healthy lifestyle recommendations, STI screenings, access to mental health services, and address other concerns. Your health matters and the time to take control of your future is now! Happy Movember!
