All About Vaginismus!
Vaginismus is the involuntary contracting of muscles around the vagina, often occurring during attempted penetration. This may happen in a sexual context, but it also may occur while trying to insert a menstrual product or during a medical exam. The spasms may cause intense pain, or they may just be mildly uncomfortable. While there is no solid consensus on how many people have vaginismus, healthcare experts believe it is a relatively common condition.
Symptoms of Vaginismus
Pain and/or discomfort during vaginal penetration
Difficulty or inability to have sex or receive a pelvic exam due to vaginal muscle spasms or pain
Healthcare experts aren’t sure why some people experience vaginismus, but there are several contributing factors, ranging from physical to psychological. Some of these factors include:
Hyperactive pelvic floor muscles
Stress or fear surrounding anticipated penetration
Anxiety disorders
Childbirth injuries or prior surgery
Guilt or shame surrounding sexual intercourse
Treatment for Individuals Experiencing Vaginismus
If a doctor confirms that a person is experiencing vaginismus, it is important to know that it typically does not go away on its own. Luckily, there are a variety of options available for treatment. Some of these options include:
